Carbondale Water Emergency Update
7/11/2025
– July 11, 2025 2:45 PM
Crews continue working on the water line break that led to the ongoing Boil Water Advisory for the City of Carbondale. Public Works, RDR Excavating, engineers, and partner agencies are on site today to remove and replace broken pipe sections located under Highway 75.
The City Council held a special meeting earlier today with local officials, Public Works, KRWA, KDHE, local media, and citizens to discuss the cause of the water outage and the progress of repair work. We thank the community members who attended for their input and willingness to attend and hear information from the source during this process.
Boil Water Advisory Reminder:
The Boil Water Advisory remains in effect. All customers should continue to boil any water used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or dishwashing for at least one minute, then allow it to cool before use.
Stage 3 Water Emergency:
Carbondale remains under a Stage 3 Water Emergency. The goal of Stage 3 is to reduce peak water demand by 50% and overall weekly water use by 25% to keep our water tower levels stable. Once repairs are complete, the system must be flushed to remove contaminants — conserving water now helps make that possible.
Water Use Restrictions:
-
All outdoor water use is prohibited. Please do not fill pools, water large gardens, or wash vehicles at this time.
-
Wasting water is prohibited. Please use only what is necessary for essential household needs.
Current Water Levels:
The city’s water tower is holding about 13 feet of water out of a full capacity of 29½ feet. Maintaining safe levels is critical to restoring safe water service and flushing the system properly.
Road Closures:
Previously announced lane closures remain in place near Highway 75. The fire hose has been redirected to reopen access to Skip’s Grocery parking lot. Drivers are urged to follow posted detours and drive carefully near crews and first responders.
Staying Informed:
We understand this situation is difficult and inconvenient. We live here too, and our city staff, Public Works crews, Police Department, Fire Department, and local partners are working around the clock to restore safe drinking water as quickly as possible.
