Severe Weather Season is Upon Us

April 25, 2016

Press Release:

Sheriff Laurie Dunn, Osage County

A reminder with severe weather season upon us.

A tornado siren is an OUTDOOR warning device only.  It is not meant to be heard inside your home or structure.

A reminder if you are camping at Pomona Lake, Melvern Lake or Osage County State Lake they do not have a tornado siren.

The tornado siren will sound for 3 minutes and then will shut off.  There is NOT an all clear siren.  If you hear another siren you need to take cover again, as a threat of another tornado has been reported.

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center sounds the tornado sirens.  To determine when to sound a tornado siren it’s based on information from the National Weather Service and trained observers.

The area of the tornado warning is based on the direction of travel the tornado is moving.

Please keep informed of the severe weather by listening to the TV, radio or a weather radio.  Osage County also offers Emergency Notifications and Alerts.  You may sign up at or contact Bryce Romine with Osage County Emergency Management at 785-828-3323.

Osage County Sheriff’s Office and Osage County Emergency Management have facebook pages, but they should not be considered a site to check for severe weather or tornado warnings.

Remember a mobile home is not a safe structure for severe weather.

In the event of severe weather including tornadoes make sure you have a plan for shelter.

If you have any questions please contact myself at 785-828-3121 or Bryce Romine with Emergency Management at 785-828-3323.
