The City of Carbondale "Get the Lead Out" Initiative for Water Service Line Inventory

OSAGE COUNTY, KS—In response to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's updated Lead and Copper Rule (LCR), the City of Carbondale is advancing its "Get the Lead Out" Lead Service Line Inventory initiative.

The updated LCR mandates that public water systems inventory all public and private water service lines. These lines connect homes and businesses to the city’s main water supply. The initiative aims to mitigate lead contamination from aging service lines.

Lead, once widely used in construction, poses significant health risks, especially to infants, young children, and pregnant women. Though banned in 1986, existing lead service lines can still contaminate water.

The City of Carbondale is asking customers to help protect them from lead exposure by completing its Lead Service Line Inventory. Customers must help identify which material their water service line is made of—lead, copper, galvanized steel, or plastic. Once residents have determined their service line material type, they must report their findings to the City of Carbondale via this online survey.

Visit the City of Carbondale website at www.carbondaleks.com to learn how to conduct your inspection. Customers may also contact the City of Carbondale office at 785-836-7108 if they need assistance conducting their in-home inspection.
